General Information

Karonga is situated in the Northern region of Malawi, Africa.  It is a relaxed small town with wide streets and wandering cattle, reminiscent of a western movie.  This town holds the only bank north of Mzuzu and is the last town en-route to Tanzania.

Karonga is mostly famous for the discovery of the Malawisaurus (Malawi Lizard) a fossilised dinosaur skeleton which was found just south of the town.  It is thought that the creature roamed these parts between 100 and 140 million years ago.  More details are to be found at the Karonga Culture and Museum Centre.

In the area cotton, rice, maize and coffee is produced with most of the locals being subsistence farmers.
